What Is the Laser Core of Knowledge?
The Laser Core of Knowledge is a recognised foundation course covering the scientific and safety principles that underpin professional laser, intense pulsed light and related light-based treatments. It introduces practitioners to subjects including laser physics, wavelengths, tissue interaction, optical hazards, risk assessment and safe working practices.
The course provides the theoretical knowledge needed to understand how professional laser systems operate and how associated risks should be managed. It does not teach individual treatment procedures or replace practical, treatment-specific operator training.
The British Medical Laser Association Core of Knowledge syllabus describes it as the body of knowledge supporting the safe use of Class 3 and Class 4 lasers, IPL systems and LED light sources across medical, surgical, dental and aesthetic practice.

Why Complete the Core of Knowledge Before Practical Training?
Working with professional laser equipment involves far more than learning how to operate a machine.
Practitioners need to understand how light energy behaves, how different wavelengths interact with tissue and pigment, which hazards may be present and how risks should be controlled before treatment begins.
At Undo PMU®, every student must complete the recognised Laser Core of Knowledge before attending practical Laser Removal Training. Once enrolled, students are provided with access to the online theory programme before progressing to their practical training day, allowing classroom time to focus on consultation, treatment planning and supervised clinical experience.
Practitioners who are still exploring the wider training pathway can also read our guide to Laser Removal Qualifications in the UK.
What Does the Laser Core of Knowledge Cover?
Recognised Core of Knowledge courses cover the scientific, technical and safety principles behind professional laser and IPL systems. While individual providers may structure their programmes differently, the BMLA syllabus focuses on four key areas. Together, these subjects help practitioners understand why different wavelengths and laser technologies behave differently, rather than relying solely on preset machine settings. To explore one example, compare Q-Switched and Pico Lasers.

The official syllabus provides a useful overview of the minimum subjects that Core of Knowledge training may cover, including optical-radiation fundamentals, hazards, risk management, safety roles and relevant professional guidance.
The BMLA also emphasises that Core of Knowledge education should be supplemented by additional training in the specific applications a practitioner intends to perform. This is why Undo PMU® combines externally delivered theory with dedicated practical training for permanent makeup and tattoo removal.

What’s The Difference
Core of Knowledge vs Practical Training
The Core of Knowledge teaches why professional laser systems work safely. Practical operator training teaches how to perform treatments safely. Completing the Core of Knowledge alone does not qualify someone to treat clients. Practical operator training develops consultation skills, machine operation, treatment planning and supervised clinical experience. Discover the full Laser Removal Process.
Who Should Complete the Laser Core of Knowledge?
The course is suitable for anyone intending to work with professional laser or IPL equipment. Regardless of previous beauty or aesthetics experience, practitioners should combine recognised theory with practical training before treating clients.
Is the Laser Core of Knowledge a Legal Requirement?
No single UK legal requirement applies to all laser practitioners.
Completing a recognised Core of Knowledge course is an important professional safety foundation, but it should not be presented as a universal statutory licence or as the only training needed to treat clients. Check UK Gov Guidance.

What Comes After the Core of Knowledge?
Once the theoretical foundation has been completed, the next stage is treatment-specific practical education.
Undo PMU®’s Laser Removal Training develops the clinical skills needed to perform permanent makeup and body tattoo removal.
Students learn how permanent makeup pigments can differ from conventional body tattoo inks and why each treatment requires an individual approach. Read our guide to PMU Removal vs Tattoo Removal for a closer comparison.
For a detailed explanation of pigment removal, treatment intervals and aftercare, visit the Complete Guide to PMU Laser Removal.
Practitioners who want to expand into treatment around the eyes can progress to specialist Eyeliner Laser Removal Training after completing the appropriate foundation and practical education.
